Bradley E. High

Jan. 17, 1949 - May 22, 2002

Bradley E. High, 53, Haverford, Pa., died May 22, 2002, at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia from complications related to multiple myeloma.

A memorial gathering will be held at Haverford College, Haverford, Pa., Sunday, June 30, 2002. A Vale memorial is planned for August with date to be announced.

Brad was born Jan. 17, 1949, in Ontario to the late Glenn E. High and Gloria Masterson High of Vale. He was raised and educated in Vale and graduated from Whitman College with a degree in theater arts. After theatrical stints at Oregon's Shakespeare Festival, and in San Francisco and New York, he pursued careers in retailing and law.

Most recently, he owned and operated Roslyn House Cakes, winning Philadelphia Magazine's prestigious "Best of Philly" award for wedding cakes in 1995.

Although Brad enjoyed, with gusto, the finer pleasures in life, he was extremely proud of his pioneer heritage. In the last few years he extensively researched and archived his family history and genealogy. He traveled widely, pursuing his interest in cultures around the world. His avid interest in theater, music and art were matched with his own versatile talents. He was an accomplished musician and played numerous instruments, most recently learning to play the bagpipes. His passion and talent for gardening and culinary arts were shared with family and friends and his legacy lives on in many grateful proteges. Brad's animated storytelling, special brand of humor, and intense joy for life will be deeply missed by those with whom he shared them.

In recent years, Brad was an active member of the Philadelphia Multiple Myeloma Networking Group, which he founded. He was an unflagging advocate for patient rights and access to medications on trial, testifying in Washington D.C., on several occasions. His unwavering optimism and fortitude during the course of his illness gave strength to family and friends and to his comrades in the battle with cancer.

Brad is survived by his partner of 29 years, Israel Burshatin, Haverford College; his mother, Gloria Masterson High, Vale; brothers, Don High, David High and spouse, Jeani; sisters, Mary Ann High, Robin High Partington and spouse, Don, and Jacqueline High Reed and spouse, Mike; three nieces; three nephews; and numerous devoted aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

His father, Glenn E. High, preceded him in death.

Memorial contributions may be sent to The Brad High Myeloma Research Fund - focus: patient comfort, c/o Dr. Edward Stadtmauer M.D., University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center, 16 Penn Tower, 3400 Spruce St., Philadelphia, PA 19104.
