Bud was born October 5, 1927, in Ontario, OR to Lester E. and Crystal B. Cammann Hammack. He attended grade school at Jamieson, graduated from Vale Union High School in 1945 then graduated from the College of Idaho in Caldwell with a degree in education. He met Lorraine Dutton while attending high school. On Dec. 11, 1947, they eloped to Winnemucca NV making sure both sets of parents went along as attendants. After college, Bud returned to Jamieson to work on the ranch. In 1956, he began a 16 year career as teacher and administrator.  Bud said he really loved teaching and interacting with the students. In 1974 he was elected as a county com-missioner representing the people of Malheur County for 16 years.  He retired in 1990 after Lorraine's death.

Bud was active in the Malheur County Republican Party for many years, and was an active member of the Vale Christian Church for over 50 years.  He enjoyed the Vale Fourth of July rodeo celebrations his whole life and was proud to serve as the Grand Marshall in 2015. Bud loved attending all of the Vale High School sports activities, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family and the family reunions on the Oregon Coast.
